Sunshine Through the Storm

Suddenly empty pots began flying. A gust of wind caught a tomato plant from ten-year-old Joe's hand and blew it away. Mama glanced at the sky and gasped.

Tornado!

"Run for the basement!" Mama yelled.

Joel ran as if his life depended on it. Mama and the girls rushed at his heels.

"But where's Daddy?" Joel cried out in alarm. He had never been so frightened in his life.

Joel turned to look as a vehicle slowed and turned into the long lane. Another vehicle followed, and then another. Joel and his family watched in amazement as a long line of trucks and vanes drove up the lane.

Joel looked up at Daddy and saw tears in his eyes. The rain had scarcely stopped, and already their farm was teeming with people coming to help!

From the Dedication

This story is dedicated to every person who gave of their hearts and hands in our time of need. Some gave money. Many brought food, and an enormous number of labor hours were donated. May all of you be blessed for your kindness to our family.

Some details have been changed, but basically this is what took place on our farm on May 21, 2004.
