Wang Ping's Sacrifice

Harvey Yoder

...and Other Stories of Christians in Communist China

Abruptly, the officers stopped me in front of a cell and unlocked the door. They shoved me roughly inside.

Immediately, a burly young prisoner came toward me. Then he asked the dreaded question. "Why are you here?"

I couldn't help it. The words just burst out. "I am here in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God!"

All thirteen of those prisoners stepped back. They were amazed. And frightened. None of them moved.

I continued standing there, smiling at them. I said nothing more, but stood just inside the cell door, waiting to see what Jesus would do next.

The silence dragged on. No one made a move. They all just stood there, looking at me. I heard a guard yell. "Hey! What's going on in there? Have you killed someone again?"

Finally the young leader seemed able to move. "No!" he yelled back. Then, turning to me, he said, "Sit down. Tell me about Jesus, the son of your god."

The true stories in this book vividly portray the house church in China and the individuals at its heart. Read how the church -- strong, flourishing, and faithful in spite of persecution -- is made up of people like you and me. People who struggle with pride, with doubts, with a temper, with being true to Christ.

As we meet these real people with their real battles, and witness their heartaches and triumphs, may we find our own faith strengthened and refreshed.
